Campaign Description
The Nentir Vale is a northern land, but it sees relatively little snow, winters are windy and bitterly cold. The Nentir River is too big to freeze except for a few weeks in the coldest part of the year. Summers are cool and mild.
The vale is now mostly empty, with a handful of living villages and towns scattered over this wide area. Abandoned farmsteads, ruined manors, and broken keeps litter the countryside. Bandits, wild animals, and monsters roam freely throughout the vale, threatening anyone who fares more than few miles away from one of the surviving settlements. Travel along the roads or river is usually safe - usually. But every now and then, travelers come to bad ends between towns. The Drake's Talons are a group of friends that have formed together for adventure. A novice group they have just arrived in Nenlast only days ago, a small border village on the edge of Lake Nen and the Winterbole Forest, a place partially familiar to both Kotar and Taldak. The folk here make a meager living by trading smoked fish to the dwarves of Hammerfast. They also deal with the Bearclaw barbarians of the Winterbole Forest. When the wild folk choose to trade, they come to Nenlast to barter their pelts and amber for good dwarven metalwork. Alerene Mokkyck is considered by most to be the leader of Nenlast, though in truth she is only the towns blacksmith and head of the local militia. A temple called the House of Brotherhood (dedicated to the gods Felarâd and Mani) provides the necessary spiritual guidance to the village of fishermen and farmers. Headed by Trya Lenfann, a portly and matronly woman, the House has kept the village healthy and well-advised. Over the last few weeks, there has been an influx of travelers coming from within and beyond the Winterbole claiming attacks by goblins have been getting increasingly worse. In fact, most of the people arriving are refugees from small villages and farmsteads within the Winterbole. Attacks from goblins and monsters are not unheard of, bordering on commonplace, within the Winterbole and even along its edges, but the refugees stories involve heavy use of magic and strange mutations of goblins or hideous beats that defy the norm. Alerene and Trya have put out a call for anyone that would be willing to investigate these stories and see what it means for Nenlast. |
