A Fire Nation Admiral led a large contingent of the Navy against the new Fire Lord, aiming to depose him and put another on the throne... one who would destroy the Avatar and make this world a Fire Nation world. And so the next struggle began...
Campaign Description
We now have six players and have closed applications. If you want to play in our game, please send a PM to Jim Mills or Randi and we'll put you on the waiting list. Thanks! :) Water... Earth... Fire... Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, Master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an Air Bender named Aang. At the Spring Solstice, Aang made contact with the Avatar Spirit of Avatar Roku, his predecessor. Roku told Aang that he must master all four elements and become a fully qualified Avatar by summer's end when Sozin's Comet would return, allowing Fire Lord Ozai to tap its power and devastate the other nations of the world. Roku warned that if Aang did not stop the Fire Nation, the balance would never be restored, and the world would end... in Fire. During the comet's last appearance, a hundred years ago, Fire Lord Sozin used its power to destroy all Air Benders. Having left his once and former friend, Avatar Roku, to die, Sozin knew that the next incarnation of the Avatar would be in the Air Kingdom. So he attacked the three Air Bender temples, killing all the monks and their families... slaughtering everyone. Everyone but the Avatar, that is. Aang fell into the water, along with his Air Bison animal companion, Appa. In the Avatar State, he froze himself... until my brother and I rescued him. The rest is history. Over the next hundred years, Sozin's son and later his grandson, Fire Lord Ozai, planned for the comet's next appearance. They all but destroyed the Water tribes, going to great lengths to raid the Water Tribe villages and capture all Water Benders in the south and many in the north. Only a few eluded them. Fire Lord Ozai made war upon the Earth Kingdom. First their outlying cities fell, and then Ba Sing Se, the greatest Earth Kingdom City also fell to the Fire Nation army and navy. With the help of companions from the Southern Water Tribe, and picking up some from the Earth and Fire Kindoms as well, Avatar Aang faced Fire Lord Ozai, now calling himself the Phoenix King, and defeated him, stripping the man of his Fire Bending powers. Meanwhile, the Order of the White Lotus freed Ba Sing Se, returning the Earth King to power in that Nation. Ozai's son, Zuko, became Fire Lord and pledged to heal the Fire Nation and the world, along side of the Avatar, Aang. Zuko, and his uncle Iroh, sought to reform the Fire Nation and bring peace to their people. Aang and Katara sought out people to become Air and Water Benders, testing for those who had the talent, and then training them. They started in the south, Katara's home Southern Water Tribe, while Water Bending Master Pakku worked in the north. They traveled the world to find some who would be willing to relocate, qualified rare individuals who had talent to become Air Benders and Water Benders, gathering them to the respective areas and traning them. It would take time to restore balance to the world, but Aang was determined to do so. We did not at first know that there were forces at work in the world who opposed us, Fire Nation expatriates, army and navy officers, allies of former Fire Lord Ozai... people who wanted to restore Ozai to the throne, or his daughter, Azula the Mad. A Fire Nation Admiral led a large contingent of the Navy against the new Fire Lord, aiming to depose him and put another on the throne... one who would destroy the Avatar and make this world a Fire Nation world. And so the next struggle began... -- From the Annals of Katara of the Southern Water Tribe, Master Water Bender and Healer. "Today, this war is finally over. I promised my uncle that I would restore the honor of the Fire nation, and I will. The road ahead of us is challenging. A hundred years of fighting have left the world scarred and divided. But with the Avatar's help, we can get it back on the right path and begin a new era of love and peace." -- Fire Lord Zuko's coronation speech. We're going to run Avatar as a Fantasy Hero game, but it won't be a full-fledged Epic Fantasy setting. This game is set in the world of Avatar: The Last AirBender, as seen on TV on Cartoon Channel, Nickelodeon and other channels. It helps if you have seen the animated TV series, but that's not an absolute requirement to playing in our game. Be aware that we fully intend to keep the flavor of the Avatar TV series, though. You will not see Elves, Dwarves or Goblins in our game. The "Magic System" is based on "Bending" the elements: Air, Earth, Fire and Water. The Avatar (and Lion Turtles and major Spirits and very few others) can Bend Spirits as well. Our main concern is to keep the flavor of the Avatar series as seen on TV. Note: The TV Series, Characters and images are copyrighted and owned by the Producers of the series. The planned movie, The Last Airbender, will be owned by the movie producers and M. Night Shyamalan, producer-director-writer (three live-action movies are planned, probable release of the first movie in 2010). We in no way wish to infringe on any of their rights. This game should be considered fan fiction as we build our stories together. In fact, we recommend you purchase the Avatar the Last AirBender DVDs which are available from Amazon.com or at Best Buy and other stores (about $30 per set). I (Jim) used a Best Buy gift card which my brother-in-law Alex and his wife Sharon gave me on my birthday last summer (2008) to buy the Complete Book 3 Collection, which includes a disk of special features in addition to all of the season 3 episodes. The Producers divide the episodes into chapters within three books, with 20-to-25 chapters (episodes) in each book. The three books are titled: Water, Earth and Fire as Aang the Avatar struggles to learn to Bend each element to prepare himself so that he can face the Fire Lord as a full-fledged and fully-realized Avatar, which he does at the end of Book 3 (the TV series ran three years; you can catch reruns on a couple of the various animation channels). We won't tell you how it ends. Our game may differ somewhat from the TV series and/or movie endings. ;) We're planning to run this game in the post-TV series era, with the Avatar trying to train up new Airbender monks and restore balance to the world. Zuko is the new FireLord, trying to convert the Fire Nation to a more peace-loving place, with the help of his Uncle Iroh. But some subversives like it the way Fire Lord Ozai (Zuko's father) had made it, before the comet, and those guys work against Avatar Aang and his allies, seeking to establish the Fire Nation as rulers of the whole world. The Avatar will be an NPC. Players will be Air Benders, Earth Benders, Fire Benders, Water Benders or Warriors. In the series, it seemed that many had martial arts skills, but not all. There were also some strange (to us) animal combinations, such as the great Lion-Turtles, Air Bisons (Air Benders), Badger-Moles (Earth Benders), Dragons (Fire Benders), and the Moon and Water Spirits (Water Benders). Other animals proliferate, from bearded cats to frozen frogs to the mighty Unagi (a sort of Water Dragon). There was also at least one instance of a man who could transform himself into a bear, so something like that may be a possibility, as well. Standard Heroic with limited Super Powers representing Bending: 75 base points + up to 75 in disadvantages = 150 total starting points possible. Maximum points from any one type Disadvantage: 25. Normal Characteristic Maxima (at zero points) is required for all characters. Required Disads: All: 15 Hunted by Fire Nation Expatriates, More Powerful, Capture or Harshly Punish. Benders: 10 Distinctive Features: Bender Eyes: Blue or Green for Water, Blue or Gray for Air, Red or Violet for Fire, Brown or Gray for Earth, Concealable, Notices and Recognizable, Detectable by Commonly-Used Senses. 10 Physical Limitation: Skin must touch Earth, soil or stone (Earth Benders), Water must be nearby (for Water Benders), Air Benders need air (duh) and some degree of space to move, Fire Benders need to stand rooted (feet on ground). 10 Psych Lim: Very uncomfortable when not touching Earth (Earth Benders), near water (Water Benders), or when wet (Fire Benders). Does not apply to Air Benders. Bending Powers will probably be best represented by Telekinesis and Energy Blasts, with the Powers limited to Special Effects related to the Bender's specialty: Air, Earth, Fire or Water. New techniques will be learned as time goes by... indirect attacks seem to be a mainstay, for example, but it's still pretty obvious who is doing the attacking, using elaborate gestures to cause their element to move at their commands. See Campaign Messages Page for more Character Building Guidelines for the Avatar Campaign. You do not need to have your character ready yet to apply to the game. Go ahead and apply and we'll work with you on Character-building. :) Interesting links: http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page http://www.tv.com/avatar-the-last-airbender/show/28841/summary.html Contact Jim or Randi for more information about the Avatar Campaign.
